The gastrocnemius muscle is located at the back of the lower leg, and makes up one of the two major muscles in the calf. The muscle runs all the way down the lower leg connecting both at the knee and the heel. When the gastrocnemius connects at the back of the knee there are two branches of the muscle known as the medial and lateral heads.
